Most likely you are dropping by because you're questioning what's next, for what you want to do about "work." What career is best for me? How can I be a more effective manager? How should I ask for a promotion? Is it time to move on to another job/organization? Can I carry my strong work identity into retirement, and if so, how? If don't work in retirement, how will I continue the sense of accomplishment that I've experienced for years?
You've come to the right place. I'm an experienced career coach in Houston, TX working with corporate leaders from first-time managers through senior executives for 20+ years. Helping others answer their own questions about all things work is my superpower.
My clients seek coaching for career transition, to land a dream job, survive a horrible manager, lead a challenging team, bring purpose into retirement, or discover an encore gig.
I bring a business mindset to our conversation, having worked in Human Resources leadership roles in public and private companies ranging from 3,000 to 13,000 employees in energy, telecom, business process outsourcing (BPO), and full service staffing.
As I was looking at my 50s and beyond, I founded Orange Door so I can continue impacting the lives, careers, and retirement of others. I take great pleasure in observing others discover joy, satisfaction, and achievement in their work.
Joel Dietz, MS, SPHR, SHRM-SCP
I coach aligned with the evidence-based core competencies of the International Coaching Federation (ICF) and well-recognized assessments, tools, and frameworks used in career transition work.
I bring humor, curiosity, and intuition to every conversation, while challenging you the whole way.
I completed a MS in Human Resource Development at the University of Texas at Tyler and continue post graduate academic studies in Executive and Professional Coaching at the University of Texas at Dallas. I am a member of the ICF actively preparing for the Professional Certified Coach (PCC) certification, a long journey with strict requirements.
If you need one more reason, dogs everywhere immediately adore me. Mine make surprise appearances during online coaching. I'm a career coach in Houston and meet with clients live upon request locally, and with clients everywhere, virtually.
I invite you to work with someone who has an active ICF credential, or ICF member in the process of obtaining their credential. There are also fantastic coaches who are not ICF-certified. Ask for referrals from their clients. Literally anyone can call themselves a "coach." Ours is an unregulated field and most professional coaches have not completed the kind of rigorous training and demonstration of competencies required for ICF credentials.
Orange is optimistic, enthusiastic, friendly and happy. As is Cecil. Then again, he's happy to run through any door.
While someday far in the future I will want to retire, I'll forever want to do this work that I find so gratifying.
Orange Door is a bright portal to that future.
"I have been working with Joel on and off during the last three years. My wife and I decided to move to a different state. I had been at the same job as an IT Manager for 16 years at a small company. I was at the top of the department, with no more upward mobility, ready for a change. A colleague referred me to Joel for help creating a strategy for transitioning my career from IT Manager to a Network Security Engineer. During our discussions and planning, Joel asked a ton of questions that got me to think of factors I had not considered, it was immediately clear to me that asking for his help was going to put me in a better position to deal with this transition.
Our move during Covid and finding a job were difficult, in addition to my having little IT Security experience (despite my many certifications) for the position I was seeking. Creating a resume and preparing for interviews was a huge challenge. Joel helped me understand how to market myself for the position by leveraging my current experience as it applied to the new position. He helped me with interview prep with role-plays and I developed a feel for putting my “game face” on which made it feel much more natural during the actual interviews. I moved forward with the plan I created with Joel’s help and was offered a position in the field that I was targeting.
I did have some challenges that I had not expected, which Joel helped me work through.
I went from working in the office to working remotely from home. My teammates and manager were in completely different time zones and not available for assistance for most of my working hours. My new working environment was very different than what I had experienced for the last several decades. I was held to a higher degree of accountability and oversight than I was used to, as well as every conversation being over the phone as opposed to a face-to-face meeting. It was a complete culture shock and I lost self-confidence and experienced anxiety. Communicating with my new supervisor became hard as I made assumptions that he had lost confidence in me as well, something that I had never experienced before. Joel was able to help me take a closer look at how and why my perceptions were affecting me negatively and generating destructive self-talk. I continue to work with Joel occasionally as I continue to adapt to this new environment.
His insight and his experience, challenging my thinking, helped me through this very tough transition in my life."
